Visit Us

In general the RWWA is open to all visitors with all kinds of scholarly interests. Which documents you may or may not be allowed to use is laid down in our house rules and the Archival Act of Northrhine-Westphalia (Landesarchivgesetz NRW). Sometimes restrictions based on individual arrangements with document owners apply.

Visits to our archive are free of charge. For copies and other services we do charge fees, though. Find out more.
If you want to order copies we kindly ask you to file a separate application.

You will not be able to check out books, journals and documents. You will be required to study them in our reading room. For your convenience our reading room is equipped with WiFi.

To be granted access to our archive you only need to identify yourself and your scholarly interest by filling out our application form.

Corresponding with our staff ahead of your visit and letting us know what you are looking for in as much detail as possible helps us to guide you to the right documents and makes your visit much more effective.

How to order and view documents

To find out how to access documents held by the RWWA please use our catalog  or consult our analog finding aids in our reading room. Our staff will assist you with your research.
If you already know which documents you want to view, you may want to forward the call numbers to us in advance to be sure the documents will be ready for you when you arrive. Pre-ordering documents by at least two work days is a way to avoid delays, since our collections are stored off-site.
